Security Tips

TIP # 1

Take a walk over to your reproduction machine. Check the waste baskets near it and open some of the crumpled pages. You might find parts of your master plan, sales plan or whatever is important to you. Just visualize what happened. The copy was not right so another one was generated. Naturally, the incorrect one was crumpled up and thrown into the waste basket. Next month, your competitor has a new rate schedule and it beats yours. How did it happen?

Better yet, what if your competition pays your office cleaner a hundred dollars a month for the contents of the President's waste basket. Again, what an edge you can give the competition!

Tip #2

Tipping Foil. What does your computer room do with the used carbon foil or fax cartridge? Do they merely throw it out? It has a reversed copy of all the computer jobs printed. The same applies to those of us who are still using the older IBM Selectrics. When replacing the ribbon, we always threw the old one out. Unfortunately, if you unwound it, you would be able to read all the letters written on that machine. Now you have the President's Master Plan!

TIP #3

Your company's lifeblood is in your records, whether they be on printout or within the computer. Sometimes information is stored on tapes, microfiche, circuit boards or other types of company products. We highly recommend that material such as this be incinerated. You can shred microfiche until you are blue in the face and there will still be enough information on it to read.
